How to care for coloured hair

At Shine we create your bespoke colour using customisable Aveda shades which are naturally derived, fade resistant and ultra-conditioning. But there’s no getting away from the fact that any colour treatment reduces the elasticity of your hair, and increases the chance of breakage. So coloured hair needs a bit of extra TLC to preserve that fresh-from-the-salon hue for as long as possible.

Here’s your ultimate guide to maintaining the health of your coloured hair, and keep your colour looking vibrant for longer.

Choose a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner

The products you use play a huge role in how long your colour lasts. There are some great shampoos within the Aveda range that target specific concerns, but aren’t ideal for coloured hair, so be sure to ask one of the team for their advice. Products from Aveda’s Color Control range are specifically designed to care for coloured hair and maintain vibrancy between salon visits. Color Control Shampoo, £27, gently cleanses while neutralising colour-dulling particles and reducing colour wash-out, leaving hair nourished, soft and shiny, and your colour looking vivid. It’s available in two formulations- light, for fine to medium hair types, and rich, for thicker hair. Follow by applying Color Control Conditioner, £32. Its plant-based, silicone-free formula softens, detangles and conditions hair, while fighting colour fade.

If you’ve got blonde or silver hair, try Aveda’s Blond Revival Purple Toning Shampoo, £27. Containing violet toning pigments, they banish brassiness and yellow tones and brighten and hydrate your colour.

Avoid over-washing your hair

Washing your coloured hair too often can strip away the colour, as well as your hair’s natural oils, leading to faster colour fade and dullness. Try to go as long as you can between washes and use a dry shampoo like Aveda’s Shampowder, £26, at the roots to keep your locks fresh. Rinsing your hair with cool water will also help lock in your colour.

Show your hair some love

Regularly treating coloured hair with a hydrating mask or leave-in treatment will work wonders, strengthening each strand against breakage, restoring moisture and boosting shine. Aveda’s Botanical Repair Intensive Strengthening Masque is packed full of superhero ingredients, including shea butter, organic coconut oil, sunflower seed oil and avocado oil to nourish, repair and protect your colour. Available in two formulations- light for fine to medium hair, £40, or rich for medium to thick hair, £48, it reverses visible damage instantly.

Heat protectants are essential

Heat styling can take its toll on all hair types, leading to dehydration and increased risk of breakage, and coloured hair is even more susceptible. Always use a heat protectant before blow drying or using straighteners or tongs to prevent moisture loss and reduce the risk of breakage and colour fade. Aveda’s Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-in Treatment, £36, is suitable for all hair types, including coloured hair, making it one of our go-to products here at Shine. A true multi-purpose treatment, apply to damp hair before styling to protect against heat up to 230℃, as well as smooth, detangle and strengthen.

Reduce your use of heat tools

While using a heat protectant is a must, the best way to prevent heat-induced colour fade is to take a break from your blow dryer and styling tools as often as you can. Blot, rather than rub, wet hair using a microfibre towel to remove excess moisture and leave to air-dry, or try braiding to create heat-free waves. When you do use hot tools, stick to the lowest heat setting.

Protect your hair from UV damage

UV rays are another major cause of colour fade. So when you’re out in the sun, be sure to wear a hat or scarf to cover your hair and scalp. Applying a UV protectant hair spray like Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Hair Veil, £32, will minimise damage and dryness and keep your your colour looking fresh long after your holiday’s over.

This season’s top 3 colour trends

We asked Shine’s Franco to give us the lowdown on the colour trends he’s loving at the moment:

This is my favourite time of year. With the changing colours of the trees and cosy vibes, many of my clients are requesting richer, darker hues with warm tones and plenty of gloss. Here are three of my go-to hair colour trends for the season:

Chestnut highlights with a rich base

Perfect for brunettes looking to add dimension, chestnut highlights bring depth and texture to the hair. This trend works beautifully on all hair types, whether your locks are straight, wavy or textured, adding a touch of warmth and vibrancy.

Honey lowlights or highlights

For blondes, this time of year is all about incorporating honey tones to bring a natural warmth. A gloss or toner can also revive blondes after summer, injecting sun-damaged, washed-out hair with shine and hydration. The result? A healthy, luminous finish that looks refreshed.

Brunette with subtle auburn ombre ends

Whether it’s a soft auburn fade or a mushroom-toned ombre, this trend is both chic and low-maintenance. It’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to regular highlights, but still craves a touch of seasonal colour. It’s particularly stunning on wavy hair, giving a super cool, effortlessly sexy vibe.
