5 ways to refresh your hair in 2024
We asked our Shine team for their expert pick of the freshest cuts, colours and styles you need to know about this year.
Scandinavian hairline
If you're blonde at heart, this colouring technique could be for you. Created by hand-painting fine blonde pieces directly around the hairline and to the baby hairs to lift and brighten the hair framing your face, the Scandinavian hairline trend was all over TikTok last year and shows no signs of going away in 2024.
‘This trend is perfect for those who usually wear their hair tied back or styled off their face as it lightens the tiny baby hairs around your hairline’, explains Shine’s colour queen Marianne. ‘It works best on naturally light blonde to dark blonde hair as it creates a naturally sun-kissed look, but even dark brunettes can use this technique to lighten to a softer brown instead, and stay on trend while working with their colour palette’. If you’re looking for a low-key way to tap into some effortless Scandi-cool, your colourist can use this technique alongside your usual highlights or balayage, but it should only be topped up a couple of times a year to protect the very delicate fine hairs around your face.
Side partings
If the catwalks and red carpets this year are anything to go by, the side parting is making a big comeback. Zendaya sported a stunning shoulder length lob with a deep side parting at the Oscars, while Claire Foy and Carey Mulligan both worked a side parting at the BAFTAs last month. And it’s easy to see why it’s a popular choice. Short, long, straight or wavy, a side parting can suit any hair type or face shape, and because most of us don’t have a completely symmetrical face, it can be very flattering.
And the best bit? It’s easy to switch up where you part your hair and have fun with different looks without committing to anything permanent. Wear it sleek and sharp, or take it deep by parting the hair above the outer edge of your brow and teaming with a wave to evoke some old school Hollywood glamour. If you’ve got fine hair, Shine’s Jonathan suggests flipping the hair against its natural direction and applying Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic, £27, to the roots, for an instant volume boost.
Halo silhouette
Calling all curly hair girls. With its 70s, disco-era inspired rounded shape that encircles the head, this year’s halo hair trend is all about embracing natural curls and texture. To create this look, soft, face-framing layers and a fringe are cut into the hair to add height and volume.
To enhance natural texture and movement, use a curl cream like Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer, £28, on freshly-washed hair to add definition and tame frizz. Then wrap your hair in a microfibre towel to absorb excess moisture, or blow dry with a diffuser, scrunching your hair towards the roots.
Italian bob
Meet this year’s chicest bob. Short enough to make a style statement while still giving you enough length to tie your hair up for the gym, the Italian bob combines neck-skimming blunt ends and minimal layers for maximum fullness. The extra inches make it more versatile than other bob styles, while the uniform length makes it looks clean, polished and very sophisticated.
This look works for most hair textures and face shapes, and in terms of styling, it’s very low-maintenance. Just be sure to book in for regular trims to maintain those sharp, blunt lines.
Bows and ribbons
If you’re not ready to try a whole new look, hair bows are an easy way to instantly update your hair without going for the chop. Look to the eternally chic Sarah Jessica Parker for inspiration and wrap a velvet, silk or organza ribbon around your ponytail, half up-do or bun- the bigger the better. To avoid looking too preppy or overly styled, opt for a soft textured bow that will hang down loosely and team with a messy-textured low pony, with a spritz of Aveda’s Air Control Hair Spray, £25, to hold in place.
This month we’ve mainly been watching…
- One Day, Netflix’s perfectly crafted 14 episode adaptation of David Mitchell’s much-loved 2009 novel. With some stand out performances, the plot tells of Dex and Em’s 20 year love story, served up with plenty of nostalgia, a few tears and a killer soundtrack. If you loved Normal People, you’ll love this.
- Another decades-spanning drama that’s captured our hearts this month is the Oscar nominated Past Lives (Netflix). Following the lives of childhood friends living in Korea who reunite in New York as adults, this beautiful film is full of ‘what ifs’ and lots of heart. A hard recommend from us.
That’s all for this month! Book your next appointment with us online, by email or over the phone.
