9 ways to add volume to fine hair

With its lack of volume and bounce, fine hair can often leave you feeling, well, a bit flat. Thankfully, there are plenty of easy ways you can give your locks a bit of extra oomph and create the illusion of healthy fullness and vitality.

From blow-drying and styling tricks and product recommendations to clever cutting techniques, we asked the team here at Shine to share their pro-tips for achieving big, beautiful hair.

The right cut

Maximum volume starts with a great haircut, which is the foundation for any styling. The longer hair gets, the flatter it lies, so generally speaking, shorter styles mean more volume and movement. Layers add texture and can make the hair look hair more voluminous, as do bluntly cut ends. Pixie cuts, bobs or lobs are all great options for fine hair. Your stylist can advise as to which style would work best for you, your face shape and lifestyle.

Your wash regime

Fine hair tends to get greasy more quickly and need to be washed more regularly than coarser hair types, with oil, dirt and debris making it look flat and lifeless, especially at the roots. Use a thickening shampoo that isn’t too heavy. Here at Shine we can’t get enough of Aveda’s new Invati Ultra Advanced Exfoliating Shampoo- Light, £33. Formulated with wintergreen-derived salicylic acid, it gently cleanses the hair and removes oil, environmental and product residues that can clog the scalp. Follow with Invati Ultra Advanced Thickening Conditioner- Light, £37.50, which instantly thickens the look of each strand. Apply to the lengths and ends only, avoiding the roots.

… and on non-wash days

Oil builds up on your scalp between washes, which can weigh your hair down and leave it looking limp. Spritz a dry shampoo like Aveda’s Shampowder Dry Shampoo, £26, at your roots and massage in to absorb oils and give your hair an instant lift.

Choose the right styling products

Ultra-moisturising products with rich, oil-based formulas are a no-no for fine hair. Look for lightweight volumising products that lift your hair from the roots and add texture, like Aveda’s Invati Ultra Advanced Styling Foam, £31. Apply to damp hair from roots to ends before blow-drying for thicker, smoother hair with touchable hold that lasts all day. Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic, £28, is another Shine favourite for weightless volume and maximum shine.

Blow-dry your hair upside down

To add extra lift at the roots, blow-dry wet hair upside down first, before styling as usual once it’s partially dry. Then pull and roll the hair up from the roots using a large round brush, directing the airflow from your hair dryer upwards from underneath your hair. When you’ve finishing drying, blast your hair with cooler air to set.

Clever colouring

Done right, colour can create the illusion of multi-dimensional texture and movement. Your stylist can strategically weave well-placed highlights and lowlights throughout your hair to create contrast and emphasise different layers and sections, which will make the hair look thicker. Balayage, where sections of hair are hand-painted to create a bespoke blend of tones, has the same effect, adding depth and dimension to make your hair appear fuller.

Flip your parting

Looking for an instant volume lift? Your hair can become accustomed to falling in the same way over time and begin to lie flatter at the roots. Switching up your parting to the other side is a simple trick to give your hair a quick body boost. Try a deep side parting for maximum effect.

Roll with it

Sometimes the old tricks are the best. Embrace your inner Hollywood starlet and go retro with some velcro rollers. Roll sections of your hair onto the rollers while it’s still warm from blow-drying, and leave them in for about 20-30 minutes. Remove them and marvel at your new found bounce!

Show your hair some TLC

Regular trips to the salon for a trim are essential for keeping you hair looking healthy and full. Left unattended, split ends can travel up the hair shaft and cause breakage, which will make your hair look thinner.

This month, we’re loving…

Reading Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, the eagerly awaited new novel from the author of the bestselling Fleishman is in Trouble (which has also been adapted into a must-watch series on Disney+).

Watching Simone Biles: Rising on Netflix. If you’ve watched open mouthed in astonishment as the most decorated gymnast in history has done what only she can do during the Paris Olympics, this documentary is a fascinating insight into her life , on and off the mat. Well worth a watch.

Cooling off on a sticky day with an ice cream from our neighbours, Gelato Gusto on Gardner Street. A dazzling array of mouthwatering flavour combinations and plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, too.

That’s all for this month. Book your next appointment with us online, by email or over the phone. Hope to see you soon!
