5 Salon Secrets to Better Looking Hair

Whatever your hair SOS, Shine’s Nathan is on hand to help make every day a good hair day.

How to tackle greasy looking roots

All hail the dry shampoo- honestly, where would be without it? Aveda’s Shampure Dry Shampoo, £23.50, will help revive your hair between washes, absorbing oil at the roots and giving your hair extra texture and volume- perfect for when you’re travelling, want to refresh your style before a night out or simply fancy a longer lie in (erm, everyone then). Apply it lightly throughout your hair, concentrating on your parting, fringe and hairline across the front of your head, massage into your scalp and brush through. Just don’t rely on it too much- it’s no substitute for the real thing and as with using any product it will cause build up and can also irritate the scalp if you use it for too long between washes. Using a clarifying shampoo will remove any stubborn product residue and stop your hair looking dull and feeling clogged up. We recommend Aveda’s Brilliant Shampoo, £20.

How to give fine hair more va va voom

Volumising products are your new BFF. We love all the products in Aveda’s Pure Abundance range, and the Phomollient Styling Foam, £18, is genius, adding volume without weighing the hair down. Other fine hair hacks are flipping your hair upside down and rough drying at the start of your blow dry to create some extra height at the roots. Sectioning off your hair and using a round brush when you dry will also make a big difference. It can be a bit tricky to get to grips with the technique at first but once you master it you’ll never look back. There’s lots of different types and barrel sizes so your stylist can advise you on which one will give you the best results. Styling the hair with a curl or wave creates the illusion of extra volume or movement, and don’t dismiss heated rollers. These days they can be quick and faff-free to use (just pop them in while you’re making a cuppa) and voila, instant extra bounce. Maybe Granny was onto something after all…

How to protect your hair from heat styling

There’s no escaping that frequent use of heated stylers isn’t good for your hair, but you can minimise the damage. There are lots of great products on the market that will help protect the hair as well as add shine and softness. Our favourite product at the moment is Aveda’s new Heat Relief, £26, which is definitely worth investing in if you can’t be parted from your straighteners or curling wand. It contains organic jojoba and sunflower oils to condition and detangle, and smells amazing too. That said, do try and take a break from your styling tools when you can, your hair will thank you for it.

How to tame frizz

Frizz and flyaways are sadly inevitable, especially when it’s humid or you heat stye your hair regularly. But Aveda’s Smooth Infusion range is great for adding moisture and smoothing- the Nourishing Styling Creme, £23, in particular is a Shine favourite. If you’ve got curly hair Be Curly Curl Enhancer, £22, is a game-changer, defining curls while locking down frizz. Finishing your blow dry with a blast of cool air will help smooth down the hair’s cuticles, while hairspray is a stylist’s secret weapon when faced with frizz and flyaways. Simply spray on your palms and run them down the length of the hair to seal in shine.

How often you really need to wash your hair (hint: it’s probably less than you think)

As a rule, the longer you leave in between washes the better. Much as you may love that ‘just washed’ swishiness, washing your hair every day dries it out, stripping the hair of its natural oils and actually causing it to produce more to compensate. Of course how often you need to wash your hair will depend on your hair type and lifestyle, but ideally we recommend washing your hair every 2-3 days. Aveda’s new Rinseless Refresh, £24, helps to revive and refresh next day hair ready for re-styling without the need to wash, banishing tell-tale bed head.

Shine News

We were thrilled to find out earlier this month that our Shine Shampoo Bar has been shortlisted as a finalist in Hair Magazine’s Hair Awards 2019! To reach this stage from over a thousand product entries is in itself an amazing achievement for a small independent brand, and we’ll find out how we get on later in the year. The bar was developed by our very own Jonathan, who wanted to create a shampoo bar that was not only a greener alternative to using a plastic bottle of shampoo, but still offered salon-worthy results. All the feedback from customers and social media reviews has been wonderful to read, so thank you so much for sharing. And if you haven’t yet given one a try yet they are available to buy from the salon or online for £9.50.

And finally, another reason to celebrate! Please join us in congratulating Nathan on being a Wella Hair Trend Vision finalist for the South Region. Amazing work Nathan- we’re all so proud of you and your hard work!

That’s all for this month, we hope to see you soon! You can book your next appointment with us online, by email or over the phone.
